Melissani's Lake is 20 m under the surface, its length is 160 m and the water has a depth from 10-40 m. There are stalactites of 20.000 years old with odd shapes which adorn most of the cave area.
It is really worth - when visiting Kefalonia Island - to make boating into the cave, besides only by this way you can be fully guided into the cave. Boating starts first from the uncovered part of the cave where the light falls into the water and creates the most beautiful turquoise shades and continues in the covered part.
In the center of the lake, there is a small island on which artifacts which confirm the religious function of the cave were found since in ancient years prehistoric people worshiped God Panas and the presence of female figures known as nymphs.
For this reason, Melissani's cave is called 'Cave of the Nymphs'.
