Monastery & Cave of Agios Gerasimos
Monastery of Saint Gerasimos is the most sacred one in Kefalonia island, it is built in Omala village on the top of a green valley with 40 wells and it is located near villages Fragata and Valsamata.
Saint Gerasimos is the protector of Kefalonia island and his relic is kept in the monastery in a silver casket.
Saint Gerasimos was a monk who was born in Trikala of Korinthos and he established the monastery in the 16th century by renovating an older one which was dedicated to Virgin Mary, Saint Gerasimos died in 1597 and consecrated in 1622.
He became famous for his miraculous abilities in people who suffered from mental illnesses, the monastery is a very impressive one with a chapel and a new church with very rich decoration-ornamented.
Below the monastery there is a cave which was built by Saint Gerasimos himself where he prayed in. Pilgrims from all over Greece come to pray and honor him.
People of Kefalonia commemorate death of Saint Gerasimos on and the return of his relics on . In those days, a procession of Saint occurs. The coffin of the Saint is being carried under the shade of a plane tree which was planted by St. Gerasimos himself. The ceremony is being followed by a big celebration with music, dance, food and wine.
